DNI Drags 03/16/2008

We drove down Saturday morning to the guest hotel. Had a good time visiting old friends and meeting new friends. Had a lot of Z cars show up and again it was like a big car show / meet. Enjoyed talking to everyone and seeing new faces and cars.

Everybody teamed up to go out to eat and since it was a Saturday night no one could accommodate all of us unless we wanted to wait. So many of us went to different places. Met back up at the guest hotel and talked car talk.

Sunday we drove down to Silver Dollar race track and arrived around 9:00am. Set up our spot and waited until the drag strip was prep and ready to go.

We made 3 passes total, we were tuning reading AFR meter and adjusting. On our last pass we ran Lean. Blew out the bottom radiator hose and the big coil spring that was in the bottom radiator hose was tangled up in out blower belt and mad a mess of it, ripping the belt apart and beating our hood to death. After the engine cooled we fixed the radiator hose and fired up the engine and we were down on some cylinders. Pulled spark plugs expecting to find a couple of the tips burned off. All plugs looked good except super lean.

Did a compression check on #1, it was fine then #3 and we were down 1/2 as much as #1. We guess we burned a valve and that was the end of our runs.

We packed it up and stayed and watched the competition.

Below is the video that was taken by our crew. It contains footage of our runs, Jon Phillips runs, Wayne's runs, Steve's runs, Thumper's runs, and some others.

Video file is 143 meg.

I guess back to the garage we go. Need to pull the engine tear down and repair. Hopefully only a few valves were burned and nothing else was hurt. Until next time.

Our 3rd pass at DNI, we were adjusting the AFR, we did not take in account when we Dynoed it about the air entering the scoop at 140MPH +, so we ran it lean and burned a exhaust valve on Cylinder #4., actually had a piece of it missing. Finished tearing the engine down and also found that all the valves had hit the pistons.

I did check valve to piston clearance but I did not check the valve spring pressure. The machine shop was supposed to set them up for a 700 inch lift cam? If they did then they went bad quick.????? Oh well like we say Shit Happens....

Until next time.........

Would like to thank Ricky and Hunter McMakin for helping / towing our car and video Taping.
