Getting ready for the DNI Drags 03/16/2008. After the Pinks all out at Bristol we knew the motor was hurt. Since then we have completely rebuilt engine This is what we found when we disassembled the engine: Both Aluminum heads were cracked, Deck of the block both sides were cracked, all cylinders leaking to each other. Camshaft had a couple of bad lobes due to roller lifters hitting them. Had about 4 bad pistons. ring lands messed up. We had to send the aluminum heads off to get repaired. Had to purchase / find another 350 block 4 bolt main. Had to order a new camshaft ( ordered one from BDS a stage 5 roller ). Replaced all pistons, Degreed cam and was only off a 1/2 degree, left alone. Went this time with Total seal rings. Had to get the block bored 30 over, new O-rings cut in block. This time we had the heads cut with receiver grooves to match the O-Ringed block. Also using a REV kit this time. Of course the heads had to milled from welding which gave us 58cc combustion chambers. Had to run a thicker copper head gasket from a 40 to a 60 thousands. Finally got the engine reassembled and installed back into the Z car. During this waiting time we did pull out the front windshield and cut out the old roll bar. Installed new roll bar ordered from JEGS. We did have to customize a few pieces. Took car to a NHRA tech and had the cage certified to 8.50. I did order a Water to Air intercooler for the supercharge, bought it on-line form a post I had seen. Of course when I received it and I had it tested the intercooler core was leaking. Tried to get it fixed and is not possible, Will have to have a custom intercooler core made for the Lee Performance intercooler. Tried to get my money back but the individual I purchased it from will not refund my money. So be aware not to deal with this person. He is a drag boat racer named: Matt Wheeler and resides in Texas. We re-did the fuel cell / battery boxes due to the new cage. Installed a trans shield with flywheel shield. Re-did most of the electrical battery cables etc. Installed a boost timing master controller and purchased a FAST AFR dual sensor meter. Below are photos of the completed Roll bar / NHRA certification. Fuel cell / battery box location:
Tuned the Zcar last Saturday 02/29/2008, re-adjusted valves, set timing, adjusted carbs. Off to the Dyno we go. We actually broke the engine in and seated the rings using the Dyno. The only time Jerry and I could go to the Dyno was 03/07/2008, Of course the weather was not cooperating with us, 90% showers mid 70's temp with 70% humidity just a perfect day if you know what I mean, but it had to be done. We filmed most of the passes, and at the end was frustrated and stopped filming. We were down on horsepower and tried jetting, timing, boost timing retard, pulley swap etc. Below is the video of the passes we did. We did a total of 10 passes, 3 hours worth from 9:00am - 12:00pm. Note: 54meg video file. Be sure to right click on thumbnail and choose save as. Also watch for battery charger being blown back and the fireworks display with the rear passenger tire ( had a little rub as the slick grew ).
We were down about 70HP from out last Dyno trip. We did change the upper pulley to 8 % over and only gained about 7HP so we put it back to 2 % over. The new camshaft had to make the difference. It did improve or Torque. Torque was very close to HP. We achieved Maximum HP at a low RPM as well so we do not have to turn the engine so hard. Made excellent power from 5000rpm to 6500rpm, so that is a plus. After the DNI drags we will post our Dyno sheets and HP ratings. Hope to see everyone at the DNI drags, it will be a little different this year and more exciting so please come and you will see what I mean. It is like a big car show gathering on Saturday night at the guest hotel and then on Sunday some good testing / Tuning and then some good Drag Racing. As promised here are the Dyno Sheets. One on left is Horsepower and one on right is 20% NOS.
I want to thank Monroe Childs for all his help and then some with the new Roll Bar, Charlie Potter CPR Chassis & Dyno Shop, and Ricky McMakin for video taping the footage. Ricky McMakin also sponsored the Dyno Pulls for us.
