Pinks All Out - Bristol TN

At Pinks All Out - Rockingham we noticed when we were starting the car it was having a bit of trouble with the starter, it was kind of a dragging some. Sounded just like the timing was set to high. So I installed a new mini starter that Jerry got for Fathers day. ( yes we get parts anyway we can )

Mini Starter: At Midlands 07/14th it was sounding bad, started grinding like it was not shimmed properly, but it was. Decided to take it off and replace with a new late model GM high torque starter.

After dropping the header on the passenger side along with removing the spark plugs in order to replace the new mini starter, I installed the new one and was going to bump the engine over and watched how the bendix engaged the flywheel. I bumped it over and got a face full of water. Found out why the old stock starter was dragging. Water dripping in #6 and #8 cylinder.

Pinks All Out – Bristol was only in 4days.

Called Jerry and told him the bad news. We decided what the hell lets go for it anyways. We did this to put a Band-Aid on the problem, We loosened the heads and re-torque them, torque up to 80 ft. pounds, normally only torque to 70 ft. pounds with ARP screw in studs. Jerry came over the next day and tore down the valve train and he re-torque the heads. I put the valve train back on later that night after work and was going to put in some K&W block sealer. I followed the directions and fired up the engine to let it get warm then drained the water out and poured in the K&W block sealer, warmed up the engine and then let it idle for 30 minutes, I was turning the electric fan on and off until it reached about 230 degrees. Then turned off the engine and let it cool down enough so I could drained the water out of the system and left all radiator hoses off. I let it dry for 48 hrs.

Okay now it is Thursday night, added water, washed car, packed up van. Loaded car on trailer ready to pull out Friday morning at 7:00am to head to Bristol TN.

Arrived at Pinks All Out – Bristol TN.

It was a long two days. Friday you could run your car to tune, but there were hundreds of cars so staging lanes were full. You had to go through Tech first to get your number and make sure you had safety equipment, and then sign your life away with all the forms. I think they had about 450 cars entered. I saw numbers as high as 438.

Saturday they opened at 10:00am, and then you had to wait for them to call your group of numbers to make the 1st time trial pass. We were car number 75, so we were in the second group. After all cars made the 1st pass, you had to wait for your group to be called again. This time Rich would arm drop you and no times were displayed. Then after all cars had made the second pass you had to wait to see if you were in the group of 16. They called out the numbers of the 16 cars and man they were so close to our number, like car number 78, 76 etc. They did not tell or announce the time bracket. We asked and figured out it was the 10.50 – 10.60 class again. I think this will be the last Pinks All Out for us, unless they have something local or close by.

Below is our story of Pinks All Out:

Upon arrival there must have been at least 200 cars in a single lane ready to get in the gates. Gates were supposed to be open at 11:00am, had a bad rain shower and then they started to let us in. Parking was a mess. Finally parked, unloaded and got ready to run a trial run to make sure all was okay. Took them a few hours to prep the track.

We entered the staging lanes, they had I think 12 lanes we were in the far right lanes and Jon Phillips was in the far left lane. Oh yeah Jon was driving the Big Tire car and his wife Regina was driving the small tire car. For those who do not know John Phillips has been on Pinks, and has won the race and took the car. It was the episode Barney – Phillips. Also Jon has been on King of the Strip. We met John and his wife at SEZ#8 in March of this year.

We were moving up the lanes to get ready to run. Guess who we ran against, yep Jon and his big tire car. Jon red lighted, Jerry cut a .002 light. Jon ran a low 8. and we ran a 10.02, MPH was 134, 60ft was 1.41.

We decided to leave the car alone and just run in the 10.00 class.

Below is the video of our 1st run 07/20/2007:

Saturday 07/21/2007 we waited for our group to be called, we were car number 075.

If you notice on the start Jerry was late leaving the line. Well on Friday they ran off of a normal tree, but on Saturday they were using a pro tree and Jerry did not know.

This is our 1st pass, below is the video:

Our 2nd pass, below in the video:

Ran into Warren (SEZ Moderator) from GA. Friday and we chatted some and visited. Saturday I am pretty sure Warren was part of Jon Phillips crew he was wearing a Phillips Performance shirt and was looking snazzy.

Here are some videos of out friend Jerry Boatwright that came to Bristol TN as well. He has a super clean Chevy II Nova. We call it the sleeper and it looks like a stock miss daisy car but hauls butt if you know what I mean.

He ran his car 4 times on Friday and twice on Saturday.

Below are 3 of his videos:

Saturday Videos:

After Jerry Boatwright made his last pass on Saturday, I guess the guy in the all out race car Chevy II complained I guess since Jerry Boatwright out ran him. The track officials told Jerry Boatwright he would have to slow it down or he could not run / be disqualified. He was running to fast and did not have a roll bar.

Lucky they picked a group slower or and it did not matter.

Here are some videos of Jon Phillips and his wife Regina. Jon was driving the big tire car and Regina was driving the little tire car.

Here is a short video of the staging area narrated by Jerry:

Here are some pictures that I took. Notice Jerry and the HybridZ shirt he is wearing.
